What is GPU Turbo? A Revolutionary Graphics Processing Acceleration Technology

GPU performance failed to meet soaring market demand

The rising demands for gaming experiences and resolution have driven up the demand for mobile graphics over the past decade. Prior to that, mobile games often had a low system requirement, but with the advent of MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games and battle royale-style games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, users have come to expect more from their phones. Meanwhile, popularity of AR and VR, two graphically intensive types of media, is also on the rise. However, since mobile GPUs are often housed in a very limited space, they usually suffer from cooling issues. Coupled with power challenges, mobile GPU have had a tough time satisfying user demands.

Turbo GPU: Tailored to improve user experience

Balancing performance and efficiency is an industry challenge. When developing a new solution, Huawei took design cues from a car’s turbocharger: the turbo uses a cylinder to feed extra air into the combustion engine, increasing the efficiency and power without needing to push the engine further.

Leveraging their years of experience developing GPUs, Huawei and Honor created GPU Turbo. Living up to its namesake, the solution works similarly to the turbocharger, and results in the same explosive performance boost.

GPU Turbo is a graphics processing acceleration technology that completely re-architects how graphics are processed on a system level. This solution vastly improves the overall graphics processing efficiency, from quality, to performance, to power consumption. This impressive solution goes against conventional understanding that performance is always at odds with efficiency. The performance improvement will be most notable when playing graphically taxing games.

GPU Turbo will greatly enhance performance of battle royale-type and MOBA games such as PUBG Mobile and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang at launch, with support for more games and game genres rolling out in the future. (More information will be announced later.)

Besides mobile games, GPU Turbo will be used to optimize the EMUI experience on Huawei and Honor devices. It supports innovative applications like AR and VR, opening the doors of possibilities to applications such as virtual classroom, online shopping, telemedicine, and more.

GPU Turbo update timeframe:

HUAWEI Mate 10, HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro, PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 10, PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate RS will get the update in August, 2018. Meanwhile, the update for HUAWEI Mate 9, HUAWEI Mate 9 Pro and PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 9 is scheduled for roll out in November, 2018.
