Finally, after almost three years of the initial launch of 4G LTE in the country, Nepal Telecom brings a 4G network to an additional 32 more cities covering all the 7 provinces. Nepal Telecom first announced the availability of 4G in 1800 MHz with 3 frequency bands back in January 2017. According to NT, this service is in-between 4G and 5G speed, hence they claim it to be 4.5G, the claim also mentions that for the first time in Nepal they are providing VoLTE (Voice over LTE) supporting HD voice quality between the callers in 4G network.

Nepal Telecom had an ambitious project of extending 4G within a year when selected ZTE for the Core network extension and CCSI for Radio Access network last year. Now, NT covers all metropolis, sub metropolis and major municipal including densely populated cities in the country.

4.5G VoLTE Speed of Nepal Telecom

The NT official claims that the initial test speed of 4G in Nepal Telecom LTE network to be greater than 2Mbps and hence are calling it to be 4.5G.

In reality, 4G LTE broadband is about 10-12 times faster than 3G with an average download speed of 35Mbps but there are plentiful of examples with 4G networks globally reaching almost 100Mbps speed with better carrier aggregation and MIMO technologies in LTE Advanced.

Nepal Telecom has not mentioned it to be LTE-A (or LTE Advanced) but 4.5G – the hybrid between 4G and 5G networks in the country. HD voice call will automatically be supported and enabled for users in VoLTE range of the telecom network.

As of now, the 4G network of Nepal Telecom is available in the following areas covering more than 50 cities and towns in the country.

Nepal Telecom also plans to install 6 thousand more micro towers (shouldn’t they be calling nano cells?) in highly populated cities and city centers for better coverage and availability of the 4G network connectivity. With this extension and availability of 4.5G, Nepal Telecom is readying itself toward the global adoption of the futuristic 5G deployment. Perhaps, we might need to wait for the maturity of 5G availability globally before it enters Nepal.

Nepal Telecom claims to launch ambitious 4.5G VoLTE in 32 cities of 7 provinces in 800MHz radio band whereas previously 4G available cities Pokhara and Kathmandu will continue to work in 1800MHz 4G radio band spectrum.

NT claims to have 4g LTE experience extended for Digital Economy in Nepal with a nationwide 4G LTE network with better coverage, high-speed Internet, faster upload and download in 50 cities. Nepal Telecom users can activate 4G LTE just by dialing *444# from their 4G enabled smartphones.

The other 2 telcos namely, Ncell and Smart Telecom, also have been providing 4G LTE service in the country for almost as long as Nepal Telecom.

Bringing Cloud Computing skills to the country – Genese Solution – a specialized company in the cloud computing ecosystem and web/software development – has started a collaboration with UKaid Skills for Employment Programme (सीप) from August 2019. Niranjan Udas, Director of Genese Solution, and Baljit Vohra, Team Leader of UKaid सीप signed the collaboration agreement amidst a special signing ceremony organized in Janakpur where Hon’ble Lal Babu Raut, Chief Minister of Province 2 and Lisa Honan, Head of DFID Nepal were also present.

After signing the partnership with UKaid सीप, Genese is preparing to launch a special project, Genese Cloud Academy (GCA), to upgrade the capacity of academic institutes in Nepal by facilitating access to and adoption of globally recognized cloud computing training and certification, followed by job placement in Nepal and globally. Genese will now introduce the popular Amazon Web Service (AWS) Educate programme in Nepal to deliver industry-relevant cloud computing training and access to jobs globally through Amazon’s job portal. UKaid सीप will be co-investing in the project while ensuring close coordination with relevant government entities at the federal, provincial and local levels, the private sector, donor agencies, and other stakeholders. 

Within the first year of the project, Genese will build strategic partnership with 25+ selected academic institutions across different cities of Nepal (with focus in Provinces #2 and #5) to encourage adoption of internationally recognized online training modules like the AWS Educate programme and Microsoft Learn programme to provide a pathway for students and teachers to access tools, courses, and certification on emerging cloud computing subjects. This program has the support of AWS Educate, Microsoft Education, Google Education, Alibaba Cloud Academy, Cisco Networking Academy, and Atlassian University. Using a blended online training and in-person instruction approach, aided by training of trainers to sustainably upgrade the capacity and standards of the academic institutes, Genese intends to build the work-readiness of graduating students so that they are able to effectively enter and meet the productivity demands of the industry.

The skill training covers job roles such as Application Developer, Cloud Support Engineer, Cloud Support Associate, Cyber Security Specialist, and Data Integration Specialist, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Developer, IoT Developer, Digital Marketer, Business Analysts, etc. Students involved in the training will be linked to AWS Educate’s job portal, giving them access to over 4,000 employers offering freelance and online jobs in the global market.

Talking about collaboration with UKaid सीप and the project idea, Anjani Phuyal, Founder and Global CTO of Genese Solution shared,

While youth unemployment is a growing problem in Nepal, the IT industry has been finding it challenging to get qualified candidates to fill their vacancies. Internet is just the best effort service; guaranteeing is just superficial.
Internet QoS if to be guaranteed for end-user home-users, the cost of Internet is going to increase. It’s a free market, hence Nepalese internet users can switch from one ISP to another.

Hoping for BMW and paying for Suzuki Maruti – scenario from service providers. But the marketing gimmicks tell things differently. There is no internet means slow internet and the vice versa.

After a year plus of operation, Khalti digital wallet gets License From Nepal Rastra Bank To Operate As A Payment Service Provider (PSP)

Nepal Rastra Bank has provided Khalti with a license of Payment Service Provider (PSP) under its ‘Payment and Settlement Bylaw 2072‘ for Wallet Services through telecommunication technology and internet. Along with digital payment services, now Khalti can also provide domestic money transfer facility and mobile financial services in Nepal.

Khalti was launched by a team of young entrepreneurs on 26 January 2017 and since then it has been focusing to impact the lives of people through its innovative technology and services. After getting license, Khalti team is encouraged to take financial services to the next level. It will work to bring Offline services to Online (O2O) and make the lives of people easier.

Elated after being awarded the PSP license by NRB, Manish Modi, Managing Director of Khalti shared,

“Digital payment is a very recent phenomenon in Nepal. Still today, people have to walk for days to reach district headquarters to perform tasks as simple as paying electricity bills. We are excited to get the license from NRB. It has encouraged us to expand digital payments more aggressively across the country. We aim to expand our services in rural and remote parts of Nepal and add different verticals to our platform. We will work to make online payments possible in every corner of the nation to achieve the vision of Digital Nepal. We will work to bring access to finance to underprivileged population of Nepal and simplify their lives.”

As per Nepal Telecommunication Authority’s latest MIS report, the country has over 132% mobile telephony penetration and 59% broadband internet penetration. Likewise, NRB’s latest statistics show that over 6 million people use mobile banking in Nepal, and the number of internet banking users is around 1 million. However, as per WorldBank’s 2017 Global Findex Database, only 45% of Nepal’s population are banked. So, digital payments system like Khalti can play a significant role to bring unbanked population to digital platform and provide financial services.

Khalti provides various utility bill payment services, mobile recharge, DTH recharge, domestic flight booking, movie ticketing, event ticketing, hotel booking, newspaper subscriptions, and payments at online shopping sites among others. Furthermore, Khalti offers users with cashback on almost every transaction.

Currently, more than 8,00,000 people regularly use Khalti for various bill payments services.
