IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. Established in 1963, IEEE currently has over 430k members across 160 countries. Its headquarter is located in New York, USA. It is mainly comprised of volunteers from around the globe, actively participating in various conference, technical training, research, article publishing and so on. IEEE is responsible for standard making of various technologies (802.3 Ethernet and 802.11 Wi-Fi standards were made by IEEE). It has a total of 10 regions based on geography and Nepal falls under the tenth region or the Asia Pacific Region.

Recently, on January 25, 2015 during the region 10 technical seminar held in Kathmandu, Howard E. Michel, President and CEO of IEEE, launched the Nepal subsection of IEEE. Dr. Arun K. Timilsina was appointed as founding chairman of Nepal subsection and so, Nepal took another step towards technical research.

This is a big news for all the engineers in Nepal, specially for computer, electronics and electrical engineers. This will be the platform for international exposure that will enable the engineers of Nepal to be internationally recognized and to contribute to the global cause. During the LOCUS 12th national tech festival organized by LOCUS 2015 on 22nd February, Dr. Arun Timilsina gave an interesting presentation on the topic of IEEE and the benefits of being a member of this institute. He also mentioned that the Nepal subsection of IEEE (ie IEEE R10) will have branches in different engineering colleges nationwide.

The research articles published through IEEE can give an engineer the career he wants and now, Nepal(ese) can also be a part of it. The volunteers of IEEE are also highly regarded by Universities and Companies worldwide. Also, IEEE pays a reasonably good amount of money for the engineers who research/work under it or as a member of it. The technical sector of Nepal will surely be bright in the near future along with the engineers with the IEEE arrival in Nepal.

I wish Nepal’s engineering professional could also be part of IEEE for R&D seriously. There is lot more to do in Nepal – as the government is just not a hindrance because they don’t know.
Calling out engineering professional to join IEEE and form a better functional IEEE Nepal chapter.
