Understanding new Li-Fi Technology

Li-Fi or Light Fidelity is a new paradigm for optical wireless technology to provide unprecendented connectivity within a localized data-centric environment. The increasing demand for higher bandwidths, faster and more secure data transmission as well as environmental and undoubtedly human friendly technology heralds the start of a major shift in wireless technology, a shift from RF to optical technologies.

How does Li-Fi works?

Li-Fi work cycle

How LiFi works is very simple: You have an a light on one end (an LED in this case), and a photodetector (light sensor) on the other. If the LED is on, the photodetector registers a binary one; otherwise it’s a binary zero. Flash the LED enough times and you build up a message. Use an array of LEDs, and perhaps a few different colors, and very soon you are dealing with data rates in the range of hundreds or megabits per second.

What are LiFi’s Pluses?

A free band that does not need licence. Hence it is cheaper than WiFI. 10,000 times: The visible light spectrum is larger than the radio spectrum. Since optical waves do not pass through walls this could be used as a means of secured communication. Communications over a very high speed with a theoretical limit of 1 Gb a second.
The technology is capable of transferring thousands of streams of data simultaneously, in parallel, at higher speeds, with the help of special modulation, using a unique signal processing technology.
