Smart Telecom, a joint venture telecommunication company with 80% foreign share, is to launch mobile telephony services in about 2 months by now in 7 different districts of the country. The company has started the general telephony services (PSTN) since Mangsir 11, 2066 with initial digits 99.
Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has granted the permission to Smart Telecom to operate on 10 digit mobile number starting from 961. This makes Smart the 6th Mobile Operator in the Himalayan country.
Subash Bajracharya, the Smart Telecom CEO, is highly hopeful about commencing this service in 2 months time. The Smart Telecom Mobile Phones will be initiated in these 7 districts around the Valley – Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Dhading, Dolakha, Ramechap and Sindhuli.
The Telecom has already worked on to extend the mobile services to 40 districts besides the 7 lately granted districted. Smart is not given permission to operate mobile phones inside Kathmandu Valley right now.
The share of Smart Telecom is distributed as 70 % with Lalsahu Distributor SIngapore, 10 % of Zlat Satellite Network Isreal, the rest Nepalese. The company has worked to spend 1 arab 50 crore Nepalese Rupees in 3 years’ time for extension of mobile services.
